The fall schedule of mid-day training classes offered at the New Jersey State Library during November 2007 and December 2007 is now available. The one-hour sessions are held at the State Library in Trenton in the Technical Training Center on level 5 and will be conducted by different members of the SLIC staff. A major inventory of the Genealogy Collection will result in an important update of the online catalog to more accurately reflect State Library holdings and the physical location of materials within the Library. The inventory involved sifting through more than three thousand items not shelved with the main collection for lack of space. Holdings were added to bibliographic records or new bibliographic records were created where necessary. A new location code was created for items shelved on level 2, apart from the main collection on level 4, and every item on level 2 was tagged with a book mark to facilitate its return to the proper location when used.

NJSL is partnering with the Women’s National Book Association and the NJLA to promote the first ever National Reading Group Month designed to support and foster public awareness and enjoyment of reading by supporting reading groups, whether they are organized by libraries, book stores, schools or community organizations. NJSL staff has been working with April Judge from NJLA and Jill Tardiff from WNBA to issue a joint news release publicizing the special month and its activities. The partners in this collaboration are planning to develop a model for celebrating National Reading Group Month in coming years.

As of the end of August, NJSL has received about 94 responses to the online survey of summer reading program statistics. So far, 27,174 children and teens have registered for the program with 51, 803 children and teens actively participating. Over 352, 312 books have been read by children and teens and over 85,982 children and teens have attended 3,950 programs. Since this is only about one third of the final number of respondents that we usually receive, we expect over 200 additional libraries to respond with their statistics by the end of September.

LBH participated in Covering the Bases: a Night Out with the Trenton Thunder on Tuesday, August 14, 2007. The event was hosted by the Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired and the Trenton Thunder Baseball Team. The event promoted full community inclusion and awareness of the potential and achievements of individuals who are blind and visually impaired. NJLBH customer Patrick Baumgartner was recognized in the opening ceremonies for his love of reading and for his active participation in the New Jersey Library for the Blind and Handicapped Summer Reading Program for youth with print disabilities.

The summary report of our customer satisfaction survey which was distributed to all LBH customers has been completed. In total 1,115 surveys were returned from approximately 740 zip codes in New Jersey. The survey confirmed that 75 percent of LBH customers are over the age of 65 and most LBH customers have been with the library over 10 years. Ninety-eight percent rated their overall experience with LBH as either excellent or good; 100 percent said they would recommend the library to a friend; and 99 percent said that the library improved the quality of their life.
